blogger insider, round 3
It's time once again, ladies and gentleman, to play Blogger Insider.
This week, for your reading pleasure, we've got Christine Geiger answering my nosy questions.
You can find my answers to her questions here.
So, on with the show...
1. Do you have a fannish personality? By which I mean, do you, like me, get hooked on a book or a show or a movie, and then need to know everything about it, to the point of joining mailing lists or newsgroups and discussing it ad nauseum with other people? If so, for what shows/books/movies? If not, is there anything that grabs you and holds you like that?
i think i did a few years back, kind of getting way too into the X-files and getting way too into discussion groups. my boss used to get really pissed at me when she'd look over my shoulder and the email address would be aimed to a listserv for the show.
these days i think i'm far too busy, but i get into bands in big phases. over the summer last year it was dave matthews band. right now, barenaked ladies. who knows what is next.
the problem with fandom about bands is you can blow a lot of money going to see them live, a lot. which is why i always hide the credit card when i hear someone i like is on tour.
2. I noticed you mentioned rereading books - how do you feel about owning your own books vs. borrowing books from the library? Do you have a preference?
i don't use the library. i haven't since college really. most of what is in the library is "pop" fiction, oprah's book club kind of stuff to me. i prefer bookstores, and spending hours pouring over the shelves. i'm also a big fan of the used bookstore. my husband and i, when we can slough off the kids, will often find ourselves entrenched someplace old, musty, and filled with books. there are some good finds.
3. Why'd you start keeping a journal?
i felt i had some stories to tell. i'd always wanted to be a journalist, so most of my entries are "column" length. i find the stuff i see and the things i've experienced rather entertaining, so i want to share that with a few people.
plus, my family doesn't live next door, so it is a good way to keep them posted on what's happening with me, and us, up here in the north.
4. How much of the 'real you' do you think people can get to know just by reading your journal?
quite a bit.
i think that my writing style is similar to the way i speak... and i don't have any alternate personalities that i pose in the workplace, or at church, or at the playground, based on audience, so this is the real thing.
5. What do you look for in a journal? What keeps you coming back and reading?
good storytelling, and a great sense of the funny. which is why i love shelleyness.com, she's got some funny stuff in there.
6. My sister and I always talk about opening our own catering business. Do you think it's a good business to be in? How do you feel, as a web designer, working as a caterer? Which is more creative?
i think catering is a great business, but it looks hard. one would have to be the chef, and the other the marketing/sales/business manager if you and your sister were to undertake such an endeavor. and you'd always have to be in synch with one another.
i think that both web design and food design are similiar -- you have a client, an audience, you know what they want, you pick a menu of presentations, colors, fonts, foods... put them together and put it out there. in the end, you hope that people will savor the experience, not wrinkle their noses, and will remember to call you the next time they need that service. both are very creative, and so satisfying to get to an end product... and see the customer/client pleased with your work.
7. What's your favorite episode of Homicide? Why?
it cannot be just one. here's a short list:
"Crosetti," because of pembleton's faithfulness to his fallen friend, and the ending with him saluting. i cry like a little girl. and the fighting over how many cookies you buy for a funeral.
"Law and Disorder," because there is so much pembleton getting his ass kicked by cocky new yorkers. stupid jerks. and there is great dialog in there throughout the ep.
"Sniper," Part 1 and Part 2. i loved the endings. so incredible. so strong. ugh. bayliss. hangman. baltimore. eromitlab... meh!
"The Subway" where vincent donofrio guest stars as the commuter pushed under the train. i love the ending. i love pembleton being there for him and listening to him talk... i still look at the leaves before it rains to see if they turn over, and think of him being pulled out from the car. great episode.
more than actual episodes is the overall storyline that covers several episodes. bayliss and adena; pembleton and catholicism; luther mahoney!!! so picking just a couple that stand out is hard.
best damn show on television.
8. Other favorite televisions shows?
i am a HUGE simpsons fan. i love malcolm in the middle, i feel like the mom. i watch a lot of foodTV these days, learning a lot... let's see. oh, i love 'whose line is it anyway,' and look forward to nightly seinfeld reruns.
we have the two kids, so there is a lot of kid tv on at our house. there is a lot to love and hate about that... for the most part, i watch more spongebob squarepants than any 35 year old woman should.
9. Favorite movie/genre and why?
i enjoy comedy and sci fi. i don't like what many would classify as "chick flicks."
10. Have you had, or would you ever have, cosmetic surgery? Why or why not?
my sister and i always joked around about having bigger boobs and if we had the money we'd do that. now that i'm getting old, i think if i had a shitload of money, i'd send my kids to college instead. i'd have a party with some friends.
having a good friend die in the last 48 hours kind of kicks that into a perspective. by the way, he was a HUGE x-men fan, and would have loved your site.
Thanks for playing, Christine, especially at such a sad moment in your life.
Take care, everybody and we'll see you next time on Blogger Insider.
